Everything that once was, has been shut down. So far, things are still working! <phew> Everything is now dispersed virtually throughout the InterClouds.

Sad, but happy day. Now to figure out what to do with this stuff.

Al Bsharah (2/28/2011) After the day I've had today, I'm thinking something along the lines of the Office Space printer scene would be a worthwhile endeavour.
Was gonna suggest target practice, but see you're thinking along same lines already!

Yes. Seriously.
I've built and managed the launch of cloud-based systems (Virtual Private Server, Virtual Desktop, Virtual Apps, Web Hosting, Database Hosting), so I'm more than familiar with this space. There's a common misnomer that cloud is insecure. The reality is that most (of course, not all) cloud providers start their world with security in mind. Meaning, security is a requirement for success, and HAS to be included or you can't build a product. How often can you say that for other organizations or people hosting their own stuff? 90% of the time, we realized that our cloud environments were more secure than those we were replacing (by far).
Additionally, most of the "insecurity" dilemma comes from those who have public APIs that allow programmatic access to systems (i.e. Amazon, Google, and others). I'm not using a service that has any external API connectivity.
Regardless of all this, I assume you use the Internet...right? <smile> I also assume you buy stuff on-line? How many sites have your password? How many of those passwords are similar from site to site? Did you have your Gawker password compromised? Is that account information the same as any other account? Are you on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or any other social site? Do you use any Google products? Have an on-line bank account?
If you said yes to even ONE of these, you don't have an argument. Being on the Internet is inherently insecure. Many of these sites provide 3rd party access to your information for advertising purposes. Many of these sites do it blatantly without notification and ask for forgiveness after word gets out. I guarantee you that a HUGE percentage of the sites you share information with are based in the cloud, and it's only going to increase.
The point is, don't base your security opinions on a word that means nothing and everything at the same time (cloud). EVERYTHING is "cloud" today. Base it on who you trust. Do you give your credit card to Amazon? Of course you do, because you trust them and their security policies. Do you trust Facebook? Hell no you shouldn't, they have a track record of abusing privacy at every turn. Do you trust me to make the right decision about data on my servers? You used to. My bent on security has not changed, regardless of where my servers are located...and trust me, I'm a bit ridiculous about it.
Cheers, AL
